World War I breaks out, and it quickly leads to a series of events that affect the future of the Ottoman Empire. In September, the Ottomans decide to abolish capitulations that once afforded European powers special status within the empire. In November, they officially enter the war on the German side. In December, the British annex Cyprus and declare Egypt a protectorate. By February 1915 the Gallipoli campaign begins to put Ottoman lands within the apex of the imperial battlefield of the war.
