Influenced by the Dreyfus affair in France (1894) and other factors, Theodor Herzl, an Austrian journalist, publishes Der Judenstaat (The State of the Jews) where he advocates the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine or elsewhere as the solution to the "Jewish question" (the discussion in Europe regarding the appropriate status and treatment of Jews in society, especially in eastern and central Europe). Herzl will be considered the father of modern political Zionism.
