Event: Establishment of European and American Consulates in Jerusalem

Under the pretext of protecting Christians living in the Holy Land, but attempting to build up their influence in a weakened Ottoman Empire, European countries establish consulates in Jerusalem: Great Britain in 1839; Prussia, France, and Sardinia in 1843; Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1849; Spain in 1854; Russia in 1858, and Greece in 1862. The United States opens its consulate in 1856.
